Junior Primary

Communication

For our students, communication is the foundation for learning and success in everyday life.  At the Riverland Special School we are committed to ensuring that every student, in every class, has a reliable form of communication to support them with their individual needs.  Augmentative and Alternative Communication approaches and visual supports such as Key Word Sign, PECS, PODD and Proloquo2go form the basis of communication support at school.  Communication is taught in the Junior Primary years through integration in every learning experience in particular within daily routine, play, fine and gross motor development, life skills, social connection, and most importantly all curriculum learning areas.

Play based Learning

Learning through Play is a key teaching strategy for the Junior Primary classes, where students have the opportunity to practise skills to increase their understanding and engagement with the world around them.  Through this learning concept students develop social skills, cognitive abilities, emotional regulation and increase their self-confidence to engage in new learning experiences in different environments.  Our highly skilled educators ensure that every object and learning activity that each student interacts with during focused play has a purpose, clearly linked to their individual goals and learning outcomes.

Early Literacy and Numeracy Learning

At the Riverland Special School, we utilise a range of programmes and strategies to support the foundational development of Early Literacy and Numeracy skills, individualised for all students and their learning level.  Fundamental Literacy skills such as letter and sound recognition, phonological awareness, concepts of print and fostering a love of books and reading are key areas of focus for teaching and learning.  Numeracy concepts such as number recognition, counting, shape, patterning and positional language form the basis for learning inside and outside of the classroom environment.

Life Skills and Community Access

The learning of functional life skills and participation in targeted community access activities is important for our junior primary students, to build their independence and abilities in different environments.  Life skills learning such as daily routines, fine and gross motor skills, health and hygiene, self-care, toileting, cooking, bike riding and gardening are just some of the activities that students engage in daily or weekly at school.  Early community access is planned with direct links to individual goals and outcomes including bus travel training, swimming and participation in offsite performances.
